Bible: Luke 8:4-18

The Parable of the Sower

8:4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus 1  from one town after another, 2  he spoke to them 3  in a parable: 8:5 A sower went out to sow 4  his seed. 5  And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled on, and the wild birds 6  devoured it. 8:6 Other seed fell on rock, 7  and when it came up, it withered because it had no moisture. 8:7 Other seed fell among the thorns, 8  and they grew up with it and choked 9  it. 8:8 But 10  other seed fell on good soil and grew, 11  and it produced a hundred times as much grain.” 12  As he said this, 13  he called out, “The one who has ears to hear had better listen! 14

8:9 Then 15  his disciples asked him what this parable meant. 16  8:10 He 17  said, “You have been given 18  the opportunity to know 19  the secrets 20  of the kingdom of God, 21  but for others they are in parables, so that although they see they may not see, and although they hear they may not understand. 22

8:11Now the parable means 23  this: The seed is the word of God. 8:12 Those along the path are the ones who have heard; then the devil 24  comes and takes away the word 25  from their hearts, so that they may not believe 26  and be saved. 8:13 Those 27  on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, 28  but 29  in a time of testing 30  fall away. 31  8:14 As for the seed that 32  fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but 33  as they go on their way they are choked 34  by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, 35  and their fruit does not mature. 36  8:15 But as for the seed that landed on good soil, these are the ones who, after hearing 37  the word, cling to it 38  with an honest and good 39  heart, and bear fruit with steadfast endurance. 40

Showing the Light

8:16No one lights 41  a lamp 42  and then covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand so that those who come in can see the light. 43  8:17 For nothing is hidden 44  that will not be revealed, 45  and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light. 8:18 So listen carefully, 46  for whoever has will be given more, but 47  whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has 48  will be taken from him.”
