Bible: Luke 15:3-32
15:3 So 1 Jesus 2 told them 3 this parable: 4 15:4 “Which one 5 of you, if he has a hundred 6 sheep and loses one of them, would not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture 7 and go look for 8 the one that is lost until he finds it? 9 15:5 Then 10 when he has found it, he places it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 15:6 Returning 11 home, he calls together 12 his 13 friends and neighbors, telling them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 15:7 I tell you, in the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner 14 who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people 15 who have no need to repent. 16
15:8 “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins 17 and loses 18 one of them, 19 does not light a lamp, sweep 20 the house, and search thoroughly until she finds it? 15:9 Then 21 when she has found it, she calls together her 22 friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice 23 with me, for I have found the coin 24 that I had lost.’ 15:10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels 25 over one sinner who repents.”
The Parable of the Compassionate Father
15:11 Then 26 Jesus 27 said, “A man had two sons. 15:12 The 28 younger of them said to his 29 father, ‘Father, give me the share of the estate 30 that will belong 31 to me.’ So 32 he divided his 33 assets between them. 34 15:13 After 35 a few days, 36 the younger son gathered together all he had and left on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered 37 his wealth 38 with a wild lifestyle. 15:14 Then 39 after he had spent everything, a severe famine took place in that country, and he began to be in need. 15:15 So he went and worked for 40 one of the citizens of that country, who 41 sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 42 15:16 He 43 was longing to eat 44 the carob pods 45 the pigs were eating, but 46 no one gave him anything. 15:17 But when he came to his senses 47 he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have food 48 enough to spare, but here I am dying from hunger! 15:18 I will get up and go to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned 49 against heaven 50 and against 51 you. 15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me 52 like one of your hired workers.”’ 15:20 So 53 he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way from home 54 his father saw him, and his heart went out to him; 55 he ran and hugged 56 his son 57 and kissed him. 15:21 Then 58 his son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven 59 and against you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 60 15:22 But the father said to his slaves, 61 ‘Hurry! Bring the best robe, 62 and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger 63 and sandals 64 on his feet! 15:23 Bring 65 the fattened calf 66 and kill it! Let us eat 67 and celebrate, 15:24 because this son of mine was dead, and is alive again – he was lost and is found!’ 68 So 69 they began to celebrate.
15:25 “Now his older son was in the field. As 70 he came and approached the house, he heard music 71 and dancing. 15:26 So 72 he called one of the slaves 73 and asked what was happening. 15:27 The slave replied, 74 ‘Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fattened calf 75 because he got his son 76 back safe and sound.’ 15:28 But the older son 77 became angry 78 and refused 79 to go in. His father came out and appealed to him, 15:29 but he answered 80 his father, ‘Look! These many years I have worked like a slave 81 for you, and I never disobeyed your commands. Yet 82 you never gave me even a goat 83 so that I could celebrate with my friends! 15:30 But when this son of yours 84 came back, who has devoured 85 your assets with prostitutes, 86 you killed the fattened calf 87 for him!’ 15:31 Then 88 the father 89 said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and everything that belongs to me is yours. 15:32 It was appropriate 90 to celebrate and be glad, for your brother 91 was dead, and is alive; he was lost and is found.’” 92
