Bible: John 19:28-37

Jesus’ Death

19:28 After this Jesus, realizing that by this time 1  everything was completed, 2  said (in order to fulfill the scripture), 3  “I am thirsty! 4  19:29 A jar full of sour wine 5  was there, so they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on a branch of hyssop 6  and lifted it 7  to his mouth. 19:30 When 8  he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “It is completed!” 9  Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 10

19:31 Then, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies should not stay on the crosses on the Sabbath 11  (for that Sabbath was an especially important one), 12  the Jewish leaders 13  asked Pilate to have the victimslegs 14  broken 15  and the bodies taken down. 16  19:32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men who had been crucified 17  with Jesus, 18  first the one and then the other. 19  19:33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced 20  his side with a spear, and blood and water 21  flowed out immediately. 19:35 And the person who saw it 22  has testified (and his testimony is true, and he 23  knows that he is telling the truth), 24  so that you also may believe. 19:36 For these things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled, “Not a bone of his will be broken.” 25  19:37 And again another scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.” 26
