Bible: John 16:5-33
16:12 “I have many more things to say to you, 17 but you cannot bear 18 them now. 16:13 But when he, 19 the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide 20 you into all truth. 21 For he will not speak on his own authority, 22 but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you 23 what is to come. 24 16:14 He 25 will glorify me, 26 because he will receive 27 from me what is mine 28 and will tell it to you. 29 16:15 Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit 30 will receive from me what is mine 31 and will tell it to you. 32 16:16 In a little while you 33 will see me no longer; again after a little while, you 34 will see me.” 35
16:17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is the meaning of what he is saying, 36 ‘In a little while you 37 will not see me; again after a little while, you 38 will see me,’ and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 39 16:18 So they kept on repeating, 40 “What is the meaning of what he says, 41 ‘In a little while’? 42 We do not understand 43 what he is talking about.” 44
16:19 Jesus could see 45 that they wanted to ask him about these things, 46 so 47 he said to them, “Are you asking 48 each other about this – that I said, ‘In a little while you 49 will not see me; again after a little while, you 50 will see me’? 16:20 I tell you the solemn truth, 51 you will weep 52 and wail, 53 but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, 54 but your sadness will turn into 55 joy. 16:21 When a woman gives birth, she has distress 56 because her time 57 has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being 58 has been born into the world. 59 16:22 So also you have sorrow 60 now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. 61 16:23 At that time 62 you will ask me nothing. I tell you the solemn truth, 63 whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. 64 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive it, 65 so that your joy may be complete.
16:25 “I have told you these things in obscure figures of speech; 66 a time 67 is coming when I will no longer speak to you in obscure figures, but will tell you 68 plainly 69 about the Father. 16:26 At that time 70 you will ask in my name, and I do not say 71 that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 16:27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 72 16:28 I came from the Father and entered into the world, but in turn, 73 I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” 74
16:29 His disciples said, “Look, now you are speaking plainly 75 and not in obscure figures of speech! 76 16:30 Now we know that you know everything 77 and do not need anyone 78 to ask you anything. 79 Because of this 80 we believe that you have come from God.”
16:31 Jesus replied, 81 “Do you now believe? 16:32 Look, a time 82 is coming – and has come – when you will be scattered, each one to his own home, 83 and I will be left alone. 84 Yet 85 I am not alone, because my Father 86 is with me. 16:33 I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, 87 but take courage 88 – I have conquered the world.” 89
