Bible: Exodus 1:6-11

1:6 and in time 1  Joseph 2  and his brothers and all that generation died. 1:7 The Israelites, 3  however, 4  were fruitful, increased greatly, multiplied, and became extremely strong, 5  so that the land was filled with them.

1:8 Then a new king, 6  who did not know about 7  Joseph, came to power 8  over Egypt. 1:9 He said 9  to his people, “Look at 10  the Israelite people, more numerous and stronger than we are! 1:10 Come, let’s deal wisely 11  with them. Otherwise 12  they will continue to multiply, 13  and if 14  a war breaks out, they will ally themselves with 15  our enemies and fight against us and leave 16  the country.”

1:11 So they put foremen 17  over the Israelites 18  to oppress 19  them with hard labor. As a result 20  they built Pithom and Rameses 21  as store cities for Pharaoh.
