Bible: Acts 18:24-19:7

Apollos Begins His Ministry

18:24 Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. 1  He was an eloquent speaker, 2  well-versed 3  in the scriptures. 18:25 He had been instructed in 4  the way of the Lord, and with great enthusiasm 5  he spoke and taught accurately the facts 6  about Jesus, although he knew 7  only the baptism of John. 18:26 He began to speak out fearlessly 8  in the synagogue, 9  but when Priscilla and Aquila 10  heard him, they took him aside 11  and explained the way of God to him more accurately. 18:27 When Apollos 12  wanted to cross over to Achaia, 13  the brothers encouraged 14  him 15  and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he 16  assisted greatly those who had believed by grace, 18:28 for he refuted the Jews vigorously 17  in public debate, 18  demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ 19  was Jesus. 20

Disciples of John the Baptist at Ephesus

19:1 While 21  Apollos was in Corinth, 22  Paul went through the inland 23  regions 24  and came to Ephesus. 25  He 26  found some disciples there 27  19:2 and said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” 28  They replied, 29  “No, we have not even 30  heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 19:3 So Paul 31  said, “Into what then were you baptized?” “Into John’s baptism,” they replied. 32  19:4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, 33  that is, in Jesus.” 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, 19:6 and when Paul placed 34  his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came 35  upon them, and they began to speak 36  in tongues and to prophesy. 37  19:7 (Now there were about twelve men in all.) 38
