8:1 But God remembered 1  Noah and all the wild animals and domestic animals that were with him in the ark. God caused a wind to blow over 2  the earth and the waters receded. 8:2 The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were closed, 3  and the rain stopped falling from the sky. 8:3 The waters kept receding steadily 4  from the earth, so that they 5  had gone down 6  by the end of the 150 days. 8:4 On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on one of the mountains of Ararat. 7  8:5 The waters kept on receding 8  until the tenth month. On the first day of the tenth month, the tops of the mountains became visible. 9

8:6 At the end of forty days, 10  Noah opened the window he had made in the ark 11

The Cutting of the Covenant

15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield 1  and the one who will reward you in great abundance.” 2

15:2 But Abram said, “O sovereign Lord, 3  what will you give me since 4  I continue to be 5  childless, and my heir 6  is 7  Eliezer of Damascus? 8  15:3 Abram added, 9 Since 10  you have not given me a descendant, then look, one born in my house will be my heir! 11

15:4 But look, 12  the word of the Lord came to him: “This man 13  will not be your heir, 14  but instead 15  a son 16  who comes from your own body will be 17  your heir.” 18  15:5 The Lord 19  took him outside and said, “Gaze into the sky and count the stars – if you are able to count them!” Then he said to him, “So will your descendants be.”

15:6 Abram believed 20  the Lord, and the Lord 21  considered his response of faith 22  as proof of genuine loyalty. 23

15:7 The Lord said 24  to him, “I am the Lord 25  who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans 26  to give you this land to possess.” 15:8 But 27  Abram 28  said, “O sovereign Lord, 29  by what 30  can I know that I am to possess it?

16:4 He had sexual relations with 1  Hagar, and she became pregnant. 2  Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai. 3  16:5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You have brought this wrong on me! 4  I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you, 5  but when she realized 6  that she was pregnant, she despised me. 7  May the Lord judge between you and me! 8

16:6 Abram said to Sarai, “Since your 9  servant is under your authority, 10  do to her whatever you think best.” 11  Then Sarai treated Hagar 12  harshly, 13  so she ran away from Sarai. 14

16:7 The Lord’s angel 15  found Hagar near a spring of water in the desert – the spring that is along the road to Shur. 16
