The Prologue

1:1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, 1  which God gave him to show his servants 2  what must happen very soon. 3  He made it clear 4  by sending his angel to his servant 5  John,

2:7 The Lord God formed 1  the man from the soil of the ground 2  and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, 3  and the man became a living being. 4

2:10 Now 5  a river flows 6  from Eden 7  to water the orchard, and from there it divides 8  into four headstreams. 9  2:17 but 10  you must not eat 11  from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when 12  you eat from it you will surely die.” 13

2:21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, 14  and while he was asleep, 15  he took part of the man’s side 16  and closed up the place with flesh. 17  2:23 Then the man said,

This one at last 18  is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

this one will be called 19 woman,’

for she was taken out of 20  man.” 21

2:1 The heavens and the earth 22  were completed with everything that was in them. 23

The Judgment Oracles of God at the Fall

3:8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God moving about 1  in the orchard at the breezy time 2  of the day, and they hid 3  from the Lord God among the trees of the orchard. 3:9 But the Lord God called to 4  the man and said to him, “Where are you? 5  3:21 The Lord God made garments from skin 6  for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

6:2 the sons of God 1  saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose.

6:4 The Nephilim 2  were on the earth in those days (and also after this) 3  when the sons of God were having sexual relations with 4  the daughters of humankind, who gave birth to their children. 5  They were the mighty heroes 6  of old, the famous men. 7

6:8 But 8  Noah found favor 9  in the sight of 10  the Lord.

6:11 The earth was ruined 11  in the sight of 12  God; the earth was filled with violence. 13

7:2 You must take with you seven 1  of every kind of clean animal, 2  the male and its mate, 3  two of every kind of unclean animal, the male and its mate,
8:2 The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were closed, 1  and the rain stopped falling from the sky. 8:3 The waters kept receding steadily 2  from the earth, so that they 3  had gone down 4  by the end of the 150 days.

God’s Covenant with Humankind through Noah

9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 9:3 You may eat any moving thing that lives. 1  As I gave you 2  the green plants, I now give 3  you everything.

9:5 For your lifeblood 4  I will surely exact punishment, 5  from 6  every living creature I will exact punishment. From each person 7  I will exact punishment for the life of the individual 8  since the man was his relative. 9
