42:5 Why are you depressed, ¹  O my soul? ² 

Why are you upset? ³ 

Wait for God!

For I will again give thanks

to my God for his saving intervention. ⁴ 

42:6 I am depressed, ⁵ 

so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, ⁶ 

from Hermon, ⁷  from Mount Mizar. ⁸ 

42:7 One deep stream calls out to another ⁹  at the sound of your waterfalls; ¹⁰ 

all your billows and waves overwhelm me. ¹¹ 

42:8 By day the Lord decrees his loyal love, ¹² 

and by night he gives me a song, ¹³ 

a prayer ¹⁴  to the living God.

42:9 I will pray ¹⁵  to God, my high ridge: ¹⁶ 

“Why do you ignore ¹⁷  me?

Why must I walk around mourning ¹⁸ 

because my enemies oppress me?”

42:10 My enemies’ taunts cut into me to the bone, ¹⁹ 

as they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” ²⁰
