The Birth of Jesus Christ

1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened this way. While his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they came together, 1  she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 1:20 When he had contemplated this, an 2  angel of the Lord 3  appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 1:21 She will give birth to a son and you will name him 4  Jesus, 5  because he will save his people from their sins.” 1:22 This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: 1:23 Look! The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and they will call him 6  Emmanuel,” 7  which means 8 God with us.” 9

2:11 The name of the first is Pishon; it runs through 1  the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 2:13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it runs through 2  the entire land of Cush. 3  2:20 So the man named all the animals, the birds of the air, and the living creatures of the field, but for Adam 4  no companion who corresponded to him was found. 5  2:21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, 6  and while he was asleep, 7  he took part of the man’s side 8  and closed up the place with flesh. 9

The Obedience of Abram

12:1 Now the Lord said 1  to Abram, 2

“Go out 3  from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household

to the land that I will show you. 4

Abram’s Solution to the Strife

13:1 So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. 1  He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot. 2
