All her people groaned

as they searched for a morsel of bread. ¹ 

They exchanged ²  their valuables ³ 

for ⁴  just enough food

to stay alive. ⁵ 

“Look, O Lord! Consider ⁶ 

that I have become worthless!”

1:16 ע (Ayin)

I weep because of these things;

my eyes ⁷  flow with tears. ⁸ 

For there is no one in sight who can comfort me ⁹ 

or encourage me. ¹⁰ 

My children ¹¹  are desolated ¹² 

because an enemy has prevailed.

1:19 ק (Qof)

I called for my lovers, ¹³ 

but they had deceived me.

My priests and my elders

perished in the city.

Truly they had ¹⁴  searched for food

to ¹⁵  keep themselves ¹⁶  alive. ¹⁷
