23:5 “I, the Lord, promise ¹  that a new time will certainly come ² 

when I will raise up for them a righteous branch, ³  a descendant of David.

He will rule over them with wisdom and understanding ⁴ 

and will do what is just and right in the land. ⁵ 

23:6 Under his rule ⁶  Judah will enjoy safety ⁷ 

and Israel will live in security. ⁸ 

This is the name he will go by:

‘The Lord has provided us with justice.’ ⁹ 

23:7 “So I, the Lord, say: ¹⁰  ‘A new time will certainly come. ¹¹  People now affirm their oaths with “I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the people of Israel out of Egypt.” 23:8 But at that time they will affirm them with “I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the descendants of the former nation of Israel ¹²  from the land of the north and from all the other lands where he had banished ¹³  them.” ¹⁴  At that time they will live in their own land.’”

31:31 “I left secretly because I was afraid!” ¹  Jacob replied to Laban. “I thought ²  you might take your daughters away from me by force. ³  31:32 Whoever has taken your gods will be put to death! ⁴  In the presence of our relatives ⁵  identify whatever is yours and take it.” ⁶  (Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.) ⁷ 

31:33 So Laban entered Jacob’s tent, and Leah’s tent, and the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find the idols. ⁸  Then he left Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s. ⁹  31:34 (Now Rachel had taken the idols and put them inside her camel’s saddle ¹⁰  and sat on them.) ¹¹  Laban searched the whole tent, but did not find them. ¹²  31:35 Rachel ¹³  said to her father, “Don’t be angry, ¹⁴  my lord. I cannot stand up ¹⁵  in your presence because I am having my period.” ¹⁶  So he searched thoroughly, ¹⁷  but did not find the idols.

31:36 Jacob became angry ¹⁸  and argued with Laban. “What did I do wrong?” he demanded of Laban. ¹⁹  “What sin of mine prompted you to chase after me in hot pursuit? ²⁰  31:37 When you searched through all my goods, did you find anything that belonged to you? ²¹  Set it here before my relatives and yours, ²²  and let them settle the dispute between the two of us! ²³ 

31:38 “I have been with you for the past twenty years. Your ewes and female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 31:39 Animals torn by wild beasts I never brought to you; I always absorbed the loss myself. ²⁴  You always made me pay for every missing animal, ²⁵  whether it was taken by day or at night. 31:40 I was consumed by scorching heat ²⁶  during the day and by piercing cold ²⁷  at night, and I went without sleep. ²⁸
