Bible: Jeremiah 23:5-8; 31:31-40

23:5I, the Lord, promise 1  that a new time will certainly come 2

when I will raise up for them a righteous branch, 3  a descendant of David.

He will rule over them with wisdom and understanding 4

and will do what is just and right in the land. 5

23:6 Under his rule 6  Judah will enjoy safety 7

and Israel will live in security. 8

This is the name he will go by:

‘The Lord has provided us with justice.’ 9

23:7So I, the Lord, say: 10  ‘A new time will certainly come. 11  People now affirm their oaths with “I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the people of Israel out of Egypt.” 23:8 But at that time they will affirm them with “I swear as surely as the Lord lives who delivered the descendants of the former nation of Israel 12  from the land of the north and from all the other lands where he had banished 13  them.” 14  At that time they will live in their own land.’

31:31I left secretly because I was afraid!” 1  Jacob replied to Laban. “I thought 2  you might take your daughters away from me by force. 3  31:32 Whoever has taken your gods will be put to death! 4  In the presence of our relatives 5  identify whatever is yours and take it.” 6  (Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.) 7

31:33 So Laban entered Jacob’s tent, and Leah’s tent, and the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find the idols. 8  Then he left Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s. 9  31:34 (Now Rachel had taken the idols and put them inside her camel’s saddle 10  and sat on them.) 11  Laban searched the whole tent, but did not find them. 12  31:35 Rachel 13  said to her father, “Don’t be angry, 14  my lord. I cannot stand up 15  in your presence because I am having my period.” 16  So he searched thoroughly, 17  but did not find the idols.

31:36 Jacob became angry 18  and argued with Laban. “What did I do wrong?” he demanded of Laban. 19 What sin of mine prompted you to chase after me in hot pursuit? 20  31:37 When you searched through all my goods, did you find anything that belonged to you? 21  Set it here before my relatives and yours, 22  and let them settle the dispute between the two of us! 23

31:38I have been with you for the past twenty years. Your ewes and female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten rams from your flocks. 31:39 Animals torn by wild beasts I never brought to you; I always absorbed the loss myself. 24  You always made me pay for every missing animal, 25  whether it was taken by day or at night. 31:40 I was consumed by scorching heat 26  during the day and by piercing cold 27  at night, and I went without sleep. 28
