The Obedience of Abram

12:1 Now the Lord said 1  to Abram, 2

“Go out 3  from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household

to the land that I will show you. 4

12:2 Then I will make you 5  into a great nation, and I will bless you, 6

and I will make your name great, 7

so that you will exemplify divine blessing. 8

12:3 I will bless those who bless you, 9

but the one who treats you lightly 10  I must curse,

and all the families of the earth will bless one another 11  by your name.”

13:16 And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted. 1

The Cutting of the Covenant

15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield 1  and the one who will reward you in great abundance.” 2

15:2 But Abram said, “O sovereign Lord, 3  what will you give me since 4  I continue to be 5  childless, and my heir 6  is 7  Eliezer of Damascus? 8  15:3 Abram added, 9 Since 10  you have not given me a descendant, then look, one born in my house will be my heir! 11

15:4 But look, 12  the word of the Lord came to him: “This man 13  will not be your heir, 14  but instead 15  a son 16  who comes from your own body will be 17  your heir.” 18  15:5 The Lord 19  took him outside and said, “Gaze into the sky and count the stars – if you are able to count them!” Then he said to him, “So will your descendants be.”

15:6 Abram believed 20  the Lord, and the Lord 21  considered his response of faith 22  as proof of genuine loyalty. 23

The Sign of the Covenant

17:1 When Abram was 99 years old, 1  the Lord appeared to him and said, 2 I am the sovereign God. 3  Walk 4  before me 5  and be blameless. 6  17:2 Then I will confirm my covenant 7  between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants.” 8

17:3 Abram bowed down with his face to the ground, 9  and God said to him, 10  17:4 As for me, 11  this 12  is my covenant with you: You will be the father of a multitude of nations. 17:5 No longer will your name be 13  Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham 14  because I will make you 15  the father of a multitude of nations. 17:6 I will make you 16  extremely 17  fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you. 18  17:7 I will confirm 19  my covenant as a perpetual 20  covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 21  17:8 I will give the whole land of Canaan – the land where you are now residing 22 to you and your descendants after you as a permanent 23  possession. I will be their God.”

18:9 Then they asked him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” He replied, “There, 1  in the tent.” 18:10 One of them 2  said, “I will surely return 3  to you when the season comes round again, 4  and your wife Sarah will have a son!” 5  (Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, not far behind him. 6  18:11 Abraham and Sarah were old and advancing in years; 7  Sarah had long since passed menopause.) 8  18:12 So Sarah laughed to herself, thinking, 9 After I am worn out will I have pleasure, 10  especially when my husband is old too? 11

18:13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why 12  did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really 13  have a child when I am old?’ 18:14 Is anything impossible 14  for the Lord? I will return to you when the season comes round again and Sarah will have a son.” 15  18:15 Then Sarah lied, saying, “I did not laugh,” because she was afraid. But the Lord said, “No! You did laugh.” 16

The Birth of Isaac

21:1 The Lord visited 1  Sarah just as he had said he would and did 2  for Sarah what he had promised. 3  21:2 So Sarah became pregnant 4  and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him. 21:3 Abraham named his son – whom Sarah bore to him – Isaac. 5  21:4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, 6  Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded him to do. 7  21:5 (Now Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.) 8
