Bible: Gen. 12:1-7; 13:14-17; 15:7-21; 17:1-8

The Obedience of Abram

12:1 Now the Lord said 1  to Abram, 2

“Go out 3  from your country, your relatives, and your father’s household

to the land that I will show you. 4

12:2 Then I will make you 5  into a great nation, and I will bless you, 6

and I will make your name great, 7

so that you will exemplify divine blessing. 8

12:3 I will bless those who bless you, 9

but the one who treats you lightly 10  I must curse,

and all the families of the earth will bless one another 11  by your name.”

12:4 So Abram left, 12  just as the Lord had told him to do, 13  and Lot went with him. (Now 14  Abram was 75 years old 15  when he departed from Haran.) 12:5 And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew 16  Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired 17  in Haran, and they left for 18  the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan.

12:6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the oak tree 19  of Moreh 20  at Shechem. 21  (At that time the Canaanites were in the land.) 22  12:7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants 23  I will give this land.” So Abram 24  built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

13:14 After Lot had departed, the Lord said to Abram, 1 Look 2  from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west. 13:15 I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants 3  forever. 13:16 And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted. 4  13:17 Get up and 5  walk throughout 6  the land, 7  for I will give it to you.”

15:7 The Lord said 1  to him, “I am the Lord 2  who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans 3  to give you this land to possess.” 15:8 But 4  Abram 5  said, “O sovereign Lord, 6  by what 7  can I know that I am to possess it?

15:9 The Lord 8  said to him, “Take for me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.” 15:10 So Abram 9  took all these for him and then cut them in two 10  and placed each half opposite the other, 11  but he did not cut the birds in half. 15:11 When birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

15:12 When the sun went down, Abram fell sound asleep, 12  and great terror overwhelmed him. 13  15:13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain 14  that your descendants will be strangers 15  in a foreign country. 16  They will be enslaved and oppressed 17  for four hundred years. 15:14 But I will execute judgment on the nation that they will serve. 18  Afterward they will come out with many possessions. 15:15 But as for you, 19  you will go to your ancestors 20  in peace and be buried at a good old age. 21  15:16 In the fourth generation 22  your descendants 23  will return here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its limit.” 24

15:17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking firepot with a flaming torch 25  passed between the animal parts. 26  15:18 That day the Lord made a covenant 27  with Abram: “To your descendants I give 28  this land, from the river of Egypt 29  to the great river, the Euphrates River 15:19 the land 30  of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 15:20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 15:21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.” 31

The Sign of the Covenant

17:1 When Abram was 99 years old, 1  the Lord appeared to him and said, 2 I am the sovereign God. 3  Walk 4  before me 5  and be blameless. 6  17:2 Then I will confirm my covenant 7  between me and you, and I will give you a multitude of descendants.” 8

17:3 Abram bowed down with his face to the ground, 9  and God said to him, 10  17:4 As for me, 11  this 12  is my covenant with you: You will be the father of a multitude of nations. 17:5 No longer will your name be 13  Abram. Instead, your name will be Abraham 14  because I will make you 15  the father of a multitude of nations. 17:6 I will make you 16  extremely 17  fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you. 18  17:7 I will confirm 19  my covenant as a perpetual 20  covenant between me and you. It will extend to your descendants after you throughout their generations. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 21  17:8 I will give the whole land of Canaan – the land where you are now residing 22 to you and your descendants after you as a permanent 23  possession. I will be their God.”
