Bible: Galatians 2:11-21; 3:9-22

Paul Rebukes Peter

2:11 But when Cephas 1  came to Antioch, 2  I opposed him to his face, because he had clearly done wrong. 3  2:12 Until 4  certain people came from James, he had been eating with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he stopped doing this 5  and separated himself 6  because he was afraid of those who were pro-circumcision. 7  2:13 And the rest of the Jews also joined with him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray with them 8  by their hypocrisy. 2:14 But when I saw that they were not behaving consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas 9  in front of them all, “If you, although you are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you try to force 10  the Gentiles to live like Jews?

Jews and Gentiles are Justified by Faith

2:15 We are Jews by birth 11  and not Gentile sinners, 12  2:16 yet we know 13  that no one 14  is justified by the works of the law 15  but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ. 16  And 17  we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ 18  and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one 19  will be justified. 2:17 But if while seeking to be justified in Christ we ourselves have also been found to be sinners, is Christ then one who encourages 20  sin? Absolutely not! 2:18 But if I build up again those things I once destroyed, 21  I demonstrate that I am one who breaks God’s law. 22  2:19 For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, 23  and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So 24  the life I now live in the body, 25  I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, 26  who loved me and gave himself for me. 2:21 I do not set aside 27  God’s grace, because if righteousness 28  could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing! 29

3:9 But the Lord God called to 1  the man and said to him, “Where are you? 2  3:10 The man replied, 3 I heard you moving about 4  in the orchard, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” 3:11 And the Lord God 5  said, “Who told you that you were naked? 6  Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? 7  3:12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave me, she gave 8  me some fruit 9  from the tree and I ate it.” 3:13 So the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this 10  you have done?” And the woman replied, “The serpent 11  tricked 12  me, and I ate.”

3:14 The Lord God said to the serpent, 13

“Because you have done this,

cursed 14  are you above all the wild beasts

and all the living creatures of the field!

On your belly you will crawl 15

and dust you will eat 16  all the days of your life.

3:15 And I will put hostility 17  between you and the woman

and between your offspring and her offspring; 18

her offspring will attack 19  your head,

and 20  you 21  will attack her offspring’s heel.” 22

3:16 To the woman he said,

I will greatly increase 23  your labor pains; 24

with pain you will give birth to children.

You will want to control your husband, 25

but he will dominate 26  you.”

3:17 But to Adam 27  he said,

Because you obeyed 28  your wife

and ate from the tree about which I commanded you,

‘You must not eat from it,’

cursed is the ground 29  thanks to you; 30

in painful toil you will eat 31  of it all the days of your life.

3:18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,

but you will eat the grain 32  of the field.

3:19 By the sweat of your brow 33  you will eat food

until you return to the ground, 34

for out of it you were taken;

for you are dust, and to dust you will return.” 35

3:20 The man 36  named his wife Eve, 37  because 38  she was the mother of all the living. 39  3:21 The Lord God made garments from skin 40  for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 3:22 And the Lord God said, “Now 41  that the man has become like one of us, 42  knowing 43  good and evil, he must not be allowed 44  to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
