Bible: Gal. 2:11-21; 3:1-5; 4:9-10; 5:2

Paul Rebukes Peter

2:11 But when Cephas 1  came to Antioch, 2  I opposed him to his face, because he had clearly done wrong. 3  2:12 Until 4  certain people came from James, he had been eating with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he stopped doing this 5  and separated himself 6  because he was afraid of those who were pro-circumcision. 7  2:13 And the rest of the Jews also joined with him in this hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was led astray with them 8  by their hypocrisy. 2:14 But when I saw that they were not behaving consistently with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas 9  in front of them all, “If you, although you are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you try to force 10  the Gentiles to live like Jews?

Jews and Gentiles are Justified by Faith

2:15 We are Jews by birth 11  and not Gentile sinners, 12  2:16 yet we know 13  that no one 14  is justified by the works of the law 15  but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ. 16  And 17  we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ 18  and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one 19  will be justified. 2:17 But if while seeking to be justified in Christ we ourselves have also been found to be sinners, is Christ then one who encourages 20  sin? Absolutely not! 2:18 But if I build up again those things I once destroyed, 21  I demonstrate that I am one who breaks God’s law. 22  2:19 For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ, 23  and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So 24  the life I now live in the body, 25  I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, 26  who loved me and gave himself for me. 2:21 I do not set aside 27  God’s grace, because if righteousness 28  could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing! 29

The Temptation and the Fall

3:1 Now 1  the serpent 2  was more shrewd 3

than any of the wild animals 4  that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Is it really true that 5  God 6  said, ‘You must not eat from any tree of the orchard? 7  3:2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat 8  of the fruit from the trees of the orchard; 3:3 but concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the orchard God said, ‘You must not eat from it, and you must not touch it, 9  or else you will die.’ 10  3:4 The serpent said to the woman, “Surely you will not die, 11  3:5 for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will open 12  and you will be like divine beings who know 13  good and evil.” 14

4:9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” 1  And he replied, “I don’t know! Am I my brother’s guardian? 2  4:10 But the Lord said, “What have you done? 3  The voice 4  of your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground!

5:2 He created them male and female; when they were created, he blessed them and named them “humankind.” 1
