Bible: 2 Kings 15:16-20; 16:17-19; 18:13-16

15:16 At that time Menahem came from Tirzah and attacked Tiphsah. He struck down all who lived in the city and the surrounding territory, because they would not surrender. 1  He even ripped open the pregnant women.

Menahem’s Reign over Israel

15:17 In the thirty-ninth year of King Azariah’s reign over Judah, Menahem son of Gadi became king over Israel. He reigned for twelve years in Samaria. 2  15:18 He did evil in the sight of 3  the Lord; he did not repudiate 4  the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who encouraged Israel to sin. 5 

During his reign, 15:19 Pul 6  king of Assyria invaded the land, and Menahem paid 7  him 8  a thousand talents 9  of silver to gain his support 10  and to solidify his control of the kingdom. 11  15:20 Menahem got this silver by taxing all the wealthy men in Israel; he took fifty shekels of silver from each one of them and paid it to the king of Assyria. 12  Then the king of Assyria left; he did not stay there in the land.

The Birth of Ishmael

16:1 Now Sarai, 1  Abram’s wife, had not given birth to any children, 2  but she had an Egyptian servant 3  named Hagar. 4 

18:13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why 1  did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really 2  have a child when I am old?’ 18:14 Is anything impossible 3  for the Lord? I will return to you when the season comes round again and Sarah will have a son.” 4  18:15 Then Sarah lied, saying, “I did not laugh,” because she was afraid. But the Lord said, “No! You did laugh.” 5 

Abraham Pleads for Sodom

18:16 When the men got up to leave, 6  they looked out over 7  Sodom. (Now 8  Abraham was walking with them to see them on their way.) 9
