Bible: 1 Peter 2:11-22; 4:12-19

2:11 Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that do battle against the soul, 2:12 and maintain good conduct 1  among the non-Christians, 2  so that though 3  they now malign you as wrongdoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God when he appears. 4

Submission to Authorities

2:13 Be subject to every human institution 5  for the Lord’s sake, whether to a king as supreme 2:14 or to governors as those he commissions 6  to punish wrongdoers and praise 7  those who do good. 2:15 For God wants you 8  to silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing good. 2:16 Live 9  as free people, not using your freedom as a pretext for evil, but as God’s slaves. 10  2:17 Honor all people, love the family of believers, 11  fear God, honor the king.

2:18 Slaves, 12  be subject 13  to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are perverse. 2:19 For this finds God’s favor, 14  if because of conscience toward God 15  someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly. 2:20 For what credit is it if you sin and are mistreated and endure it? But if you do good and suffer and so endure, this finds favor with God. 16  2:21 For to this you were called, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example for you to follow in his steps. 2:22 He 17  committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth. 18

4:12 When you try to cultivate 1  the

ground it will no longer yield 2  its best 3  for you. You will be a homeless wanderer 4  on the earth.” 4:13 Then Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment 5  is too great to endure! 6  4:14 Look! You are driving me off the land 7  today, and I must hide from your presence. 8  I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me.” 4:15 But the Lord said to him, “All right then, 9  if anyone kills Cain, Cain will be avenged seven times as much.” 10  Then the Lord put a special mark 11  on Cain so that no one who found him would strike him down. 12  4:16 So Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and lived in the land of Nod, 13  east of Eden.

The Beginning of Civilization

4:17 Cain had marital relations 14  with his wife, and she became pregnant 15  and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was building a city, and he named the city after 16  his son Enoch. 4:18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father 17  of Mehujael. Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

4:19 Lamech took two wives for himself; the name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah.
