1:18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1:19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.” ¹  1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? ²  Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? 1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. 1:22 For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, 1:23 but we preach about a crucified Christ, ³  a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 1:24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, ⁴  and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. ⁵ 

2:8 The Lord God planted an orchard ⁹  in the east, ¹⁰  in Eden; ¹¹  and there he placed the man he had formed. ¹²  2:9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil, ¹³  every tree that was pleasing to look at ¹⁴  and good for food. (Now ¹⁵  the tree of life ¹⁶  and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil ¹⁷  were in the middle of the orchard.)

2:10 Now ¹⁸  a river flows ¹⁹  from Eden ²⁰  to water the orchard, and from there it divides ²¹  into four headstreams. ²²  2:11 The name of the first is Pishon; it runs through ²³  the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 2:12 (The gold of that land is pure; ²⁴  pearls ²⁵  and lapis lazuli ²⁶  are also there). 2:13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it runs through ²⁷  the entire land of Cush. ²⁸  2:14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. ²⁹  The fourth river is the Euphrates.

2:15 The Lord God took the man and placed ³⁰  him in the orchard in ³¹  Eden to care for it and to maintain it. ³²  2:16 Then the Lord God commanded ³³  the man, “You may freely eat ³⁴  fruit ³⁵  from every tree of the orchard,
