Bible: 1 Corinthians 1:18-25; 2:6-16

The Message of the Cross

1:18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1:19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.” 1  1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? 2  Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? 1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. 1:22 For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, 1:23 but we preach about a crucified Christ, 3  a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. 1:24 But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, 4  and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. 5

2:6 Springs 1  would well up 2  from the earth and water 3  the whole surface of the ground. 4  2:7 The Lord God formed 5  the man from the soil of the ground 6  and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, 7  and the man became a living being. 8

2:8 The Lord God planted an orchard 9  in the east, 10  in Eden; 11  and there he placed the man he had formed. 12  2:9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow from the soil, 13  every tree that was pleasing to look at 14  and good for food. (Now 15  the tree of life 16  and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 17  were in the middle of the orchard.)

2:10 Now 18  a river flows 19  from Eden 20  to water the orchard, and from there it divides 21  into four headstreams. 22  2:11 The name of the first is Pishon; it runs through 23  the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 2:12 (The gold of that land is pure; 24  pearls 25  and lapis lazuli 26  are also there). 2:13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it runs through 27  the entire land of Cush. 28  2:14 The name of the third river is Tigris; it runs along the east side of Assyria. 29  The fourth river is the Euphrates.

2:15 The Lord God took the man and placed 30  him in the orchard in 31  Eden to care for it and to maintain it. 32  2:16 Then the Lord God commanded 33  the man, “You may freely eat 34  fruit 35  from every tree of the orchard,
